What are fan guards used for? A selection and manufacturing guide
A fan guard is a wire structure that forms a physical barrier around rotating fan blades. Its design must consider access risks, airflow, mounting dimensions and operating conditions together.

What does an industrial fan guard do?
Ventilation, cooling and machinery applications require careful consideration of the area around a fan. A guard forms part of the design intended to restrict access to moving components. Not every wire grille provides the same protection: openings and distance from the blades must be assessed within the complete equipment.
A fan guard is not a filter. Dust retention, water resistance or complete exclusion of small objects cannot be assumed simply because a guard is fitted. Define these additional requirements separately.
Why do geometry and mounting matter?
Matching the outside diameter is only the beginning. Guard depth, central opening, flanges or mounting arms, hole positions and installation clearances must also suit the equipment. A split construction may be considered where installation and servicing require it.
Wire diameter, openings and guard geometry should be reviewed against the fan’s airflow requirements. Different designs cannot be assumed to have identical effects on airflow or noise.
What should a technical drawing include?
A technical drawing or CAD data provides a useful starting point for manufacturing review and quotation. An existing sample can also help explain the requirements.
- Outside diameter, guard depth and any central opening.
- Wire diameters, critical dimensions and tolerances.
- Mounting points, hole dimensions and connection details.
- Raw material, coating requirements and operating environment.
- Quantity, sample requirements and agreed inspection needs.
How should raw material and coating be selected?
Steel wire, stainless steel and galvanised wire can be assessed against the project requirements. Moisture, corrosion exposure, outdoor conditions and appearance influence the coating specification.
Galvanizing, chrome plating, electrostatic powder coating, cataphoresis and wet painting address different needs. Selection should consider substrate, access for coating and service conditions. Specify colour, texture, masking and critical fits in advance.
What defines precision manufacturing?
Precision involves more than one dimension. Bending geometry, weld positions and mounting dimensions must be assessed against the approved drawing. Retaining critical fits after coating is also part of production planning.
Based in the Muradiye Organized Industrial Zone in Manisa, Türkiye, VOLL Engineering offers manufacturing solutions for custom fan guards, bent wire parts and welded products. Bending, welding and coating requirements are reviewed per project, with the final specification defined before quotation and production.
Frequently asked questions
Can the same guard be fitted to every fan?
No. Diameter, depth, mounting points, blade clearance and operating conditions must be reviewed together.
Do custom fan guards require a technical drawing?
A drawing or CAD data is preferred. If you have a sample, share the available information so the VOLL team can help define manufacturing requirements.
